The Rosary Catholic Primary School

Racial Justice, Equality and Diversity (RJED) Statement

RJED stands for ‘Racial Justice, Equality and Diversity’.

Implicit in the title is the importance of ‘inclusion’ – we are all equal members of a diverse community, characterised by mutual respect and love. The love of God - who created each one in his own image and loves each person uniquely and unconditionally – is at the foundation of this initiative. At The Rosary Catholic Primary School we recognise the essential requirement to oppose racism and seek racial equity in all aspects of our school’s ethos, curriculum and practices.

The command to love our neighbour extends to all human beings irrespective of race, ethnicity, culture, or background; as Christ’s disciples, our love for one another will ensure that all members of our school community are held to be equal and are treated with dignity and respect.

We aim to challenge bias, discrimination, stereotyping and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under the Equality Act 2010, that can lead to racial injustice or inequality and will work to embed anti-racist practice into all areas of our work, to create a more equitable and inclusive community.

The promotion of human dignity is the foundation of Catholic social teaching. We aim to educate our young people as to what needs to be rejected as wrongful and unworthy and celebrate our common humanity.

We aim to address the cumulative effects of past and present inequities to eliminate disparities and enable all our pupils to flourish. We believe that this can be achieved through the education of the whole person throughout the whole curriculum.

As an expression of Christ’s love, we support a vibrant school with full equality, that embraces diversity and allows for equitable opportunity for all; together we celebrate the diversity that enriches and unifies our community.

 Our pledge is to:

Work together to ensure all differences are celebrated

Promote and support racial justice, equality and diversity in aspects of our Catholic life.

Act responsibly and foster an inclusive attitude whenever and wherever we see injustice· inspire our children to embrace racial justice, equality and diversity.

Teach our children that every human being is created equally in the image of God.

We have ensured that RJED is embedded in our curriculum. Please refer to our RJED Curriculum Overview for further detail.

“Act justly, love kindly and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

At The Rosary Catholic Primary School, we aim to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, with special emphasis on promoting equality and diversity for all as children of God. We provide a safe, inclusive and challenging learning journey in an environment where there is pride in achievement, teamwork, respect and trust for all. Our intent is for our pupils to grow as people of compassion, empathy, respect and kindness; to aspire, to believe and to achieve, and our curriculum reflects this. We value and celebrate our culturally diverse community and have customised our curriculum to meet the needs of our children in gaining a good understanding of who they are and the love of Christ for all, irrespective of race, religion and cultural differences. This permeates our curriculum as we are strengthened and guided by our patron saint, Our Lady of the Rosary.

We achieve this in a variety of ways.

 RJED in Our Curriculum

Catholic Social Teaching

We ensure that we teach all aspects of the Rooted in Love programme inspiring our children to put their faith into action, working together for a just and compassionate world.  Two of the themes that we teach are Human Dignity and Dignity for Workers. ‘God is present in every human person, regardless of religion, culture, nationality, orientation or economic standing. Each one of us is unique and beautiful. We are called to treat every person and every creature with loving respect.’ (Cafod website)

Gospel Values

We celebrate a different value of the Gospel each half term. These values teach us that we have a responsibility to our planet and to all human life; and that justice for all – and often the courage to stand up for what is right - must remain at the heart of all our actions.

Religious Education

From EYFS to Year 4 we follow the Religious Education Directory. Our Religious Education programme (RED: EYFS to Year 4) contains a branch of learning entitled Dialogue and Encounter.

In this branch, our children learn how Christians work together with people of different religious convictions and all people of goodwill towards the common good, respecting the dignity of all humanity. They encounter other pathways of belief, understanding how we are all connected.
